EVENT DETAILS

Climate Masters was developed at the University of Oregon Climate Leadership Initiative and is modeled after the Master Gardeners program. The purpose of a Climate Masters course is to provide approximately 30 hours of in-class programming to participants over a 10-week time frame. The classes are designed to provide ideas of how we can reduce our carbon and water footprints through a variety of ways, including energy conservation, waste reduction, transportation, consumption, food/agriculture, and water management. Upon completion, participants create and implement a 30-hour service project in the community. This project has two objectives for the participants: 1) Serve as a positive messenger of how we as individuals and a community can reduce our carbon footprints. 2) Incorporate the learned material into a small-scale, community service effort.

The New Mexico Climate Masters program was initiated in 2008 by the New Mexico Environment Department and was discontinued under the Martinez administration in fall 2011. The Santa Fe Watershed Association has run the program since 2012.

The curriculum focuses on climate change and the interrelated connections between water, soil, consumption/waste, energy, transportation and more. Weekly, expert guest speakers will provide an in-depth presentation in one of the topic areas. Participants will also be taken on a few field trips, including one into the Upper Santa Fe Watershed to witness first-hand the efforts undertaken to protect our precious water.

Once the course is completed, students are required to complete at least 30 hours of community service before they receive the title of “Climate Master.”

The cost of only $20 includes all presentations, field trips, and the new knowledge and inspiration gained from experts in a variety of fields.
